I’m a Registered Dietitian and ONE THING that you can do to improve your diet is eat more fiber! In my opinion, fiber is the most common component lacking in so many of our diets. We should aim for 25-30g per day but majority of us are not reaching this.

So, let me talk you through some of the advantages of meeting your daily fiber requirements.
1. Digestive Health:
Fiber aids in maintaining regular bowel movements and prevents constipation.
2. Weight Management:
High-fiber foods are often less energy-dense, meaning they provide fewer calories for the same weight compared to low-fiber foods. Additionally, fiber-rich foods tend to be more filling, helping control appetite and contributing to weight management.
3. Blood Sugar Control:
Soluble fiber, found in foods like oats and legumes, can help regulate blood sugar levels by slowing down the absorption of sugar. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with diabetes or those at risk of developing the condition.
4. Heart Health:
Fiber is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. Soluble fiber helps lower cholesterol levels by binding to cholesterol particles and eliminating them from the body.
5. Stable Energy Levels:
Foods high in fiber are digested more slowly, leading to a more gradual release of energy. This can contribute to sustained energy levels throughout the day.
6. Gut Health:
Fiber serves as a prebiotic, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. A healthy gut is associated with various health benefits, including improved immune function, better nutrient absorption, mental health and so much more!

It’s important to remember that sudden increases in your fiber intake can cause digestive discomfort. Gradually increase your fiber intake over a few days or weeks and make sure you are drinking plenty of water to help your body adjust to the increased fiber.
